Did you know that one of the greatest myths and misconceptions about productivity (in my opinion) relates to downtime? Somehow in the past several decades we came to a belief that when we are resting, doing something relaxing, or something fun that isn’t productive time.
We’ve even been told that it’s wasted time! What really gets me is when someone starts telling you that sleep is wasted time. (“I’ll sleep when I’m dead.”) Allow me to say very clearly… this isn’t true! There have been dozens of studies in the realm of energy management that prove undeniably that we are dramatically more functional and focused with 7-9 hours of sleep each night. (Take a look at Dr. Michael Breus’ book Power of When for an excellent exploration of sleep & chronotypes.)
Personally, I feel clearly how productive downtime can be, particularly right now, because I have a rather large personal announcement for you all

I’m pregnant!

Yep, I’m happy to announce to you all that Brian & I will be expecting our first child in June 2017. So, right now, rest is often the top order of business. As I occasionally remind Brian, it might look like I’m not doing anything right now, but I’m creating a brain (or a foot, or a lung, etc.)
But, even without my excellent reason for some extra rest, this is a great time of year to ensure that you’re getting some downtime. Why? because so many people are taking it all at once. Many people around the world take vacation at this time of year, which means everyone understands if you do too!
Now in December/early January is a great time for a break. Many studies have been done on the importance of taking breaks… both short breaks throughout our day and longer breaks for vacations. Hopefully, at this holiday season you have given yourself the gift of some time off… true downtime away from work, email, phone calls, etc.

Four Tips for Planning Productive Downtime

Therefore, as a little holiday bonus for you, and to help you give yourself permission to enjoy your holiday downtime… here are a few quick insights that can immediately help you become both more peaceful and more productive:
1. Get at least 7-9 hours of sleep each night for optimal functioning. (Circadian Rhythm)
2. Take a 5-15 minute break roughly every 90-minutes to improve your ability to focus on your tasks. (Ultradian Rhythm)
3. Go on a 4-10 day vacation at least once per quarter… and even better if one of those trips could be at least 14 days. A change of location and rest from your daily routine resets your internal pace and allows for a seasonal energy oscillation rather than purely a daily or weekly pattern shift.
4. Book yourself 1 full day after any vacation for landing time (don’t schedule meetings, and keep your email “away message” on for the extra day to buy yourself time to respond.)
If you implement these four tips into your life, then you will watch your energy levels soar. So, enjoy your holiday downtime… it’s part of ensuring your productive future!
