Do you have an ugly metal filing cabinet rusting somewhere in your office? Have you ever wished it could go away but been baffled by where to put your files without it? Today we’re mixing things up from my usual style of posts and giving you 10 alternatives to your old metal filing cabinet that can make your office either more beautiful or more functional (or both!) So, hold on to your hats and let’s get CREATIVE!!!

Alternatives to Your Ugly Metal Filing Cabinet

  • File Baskets – Much more attractive looking, these baskets can be tucked on a bookshelf, in a closet, or under your desk to keep files nearby. (Learn More)

  • File Crates – A bit more rugged looking. How about a wooden file crate? Still keeps files open and easy to access rather than hidden away in a cabinet. (Learn More)

  • File Storage Ottoman – Isn’t this a lovely little piece?! Maybe an ottoman that can both store your files and prop up your feet while you work is just the ticket! (Learn More)

  • Storage Bench – Why not have more storage AND a nice window seat too? (I’ve seen these as built-ins… which is SUPER GREAT!) Or just a lovely bench is cool too. Notice that this design has the drawers that open along the front rather than a top that lifts. I would encourage that design since it means you don’t have to keep lifting the pillows to access your files. (Learn More)

Use the Walls

  • Wall File Rack – Love how this displays a range of files on a cascading rack. Definitely keeps the files right in sight, so no concerns about “Out-of-sight, out-of-mind” here. (Learn more)

Throw Out the Files ENTIRELY!

  • Binders – Forget about folders! Maybe some attractive (and well-labeled!) binders could do the job. I generally don’t love that it takes multiple extra steps to file new paperwork in binders, but they can work well for some people. (Learn more)

  • Binder Clip Filing – How about some labeled file clips rather than folders? You could use this with several of the storage containers above and lose the folders entirely… or how about some magazine holders (like the top shelf here)? I could definitely see how this could work for some sets of information. Remember, those clips come in a LOT of different sizes. (Learn More)

  • Plastic Envelopes or Folders – Keep your files visible (or colorful!) Yes, these look like they belong in a classroom, but I’ve seen grown-ups with an aversion to standard file folders and cabinets make systems like this work BEAUTIFULLY. (Learn More)
